The Energy sector in the North East

Find out more about the energy sector and the careers available within it. This toolkit aims to support secondary school teachers to link careers in the North East Energy sector to the Maths, English, and Science KS3 and KS4 curriculum.

With rapid technological innovation, a growing population and a changing climate, the way we generate and use energy must respond.

The North East has an innovative energy community that is responding, to contribute to new solutions that provide clean, secure, and accessible energy.

Within the broader Energy sector there are 3 key growing subsectors:

  • Offshore energy and subsea technology
  • Electric vehicles and battery technology
  • Low-carbon heat

Each presents opportunity to drive economic growth and deliver more and better jobs.  

This toolkit focuses on these three growing subsectors within the North East Energy sector, highlighting a range of job roles, skills, and routes into careers.

Offshore energy and subsea tech

The North East is the leading location in England in the wind energy, oil, and gas sectors with a thriving cluster of supply chain businesses to the offshore energy and subsea industry, supporting 15,000 jobs.

Electric vehicle and battery technology

Electrification is the replacement of petrol and diesel engines in cars and other vehicles, within electric motors and drives. 

Low carbon heat

At present, 86% of homes across the UK, use natural gas for their heating. As a fossil fuel, this is one of the key contributors to the high levels of greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere.
