About T Levels

T Levels are a new two-year qualification for 16-19 year olds. They are ideal for learners who have finished GCSEs and want the knowledge and experience to get straight into employment, an apprenticeship or higher education.

T Levels have been developed in collaboration with employers to reflect what they need from the future workforce and prepare learners for work in specific industries. They are an alternative to A Levels. They are designed to help students develop the knowledge and technical skills required for skilled careers.

All T Levels are based on occupations recognised by employers. The Institute for Apprenticeships' Occupational Maps bring these together to show where technical education can lead.

T Levels involve more classroom study than apprenticeships, which means learners experience an industry placement alongside studies. Their time is split between 80% classroom learning and 20% industry placements which will require a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days).

Hosting an industry placement

Industry placements are a great opportunity to work with the next generation of local talent. They allow learners to develop the knowledge, attitude and practical skills required for their chosen occupation.

T Level industry placements are longer and more structured than traditional work experience. Employers work in partnership with a local school or college to make sure everyone gets the most from the opportunity.

There are no direct costs for taking on a placement student. However there may be business costs involved, like time to plan and supervise the placement.

The first step to hosting a placement is to get in touch with local schools and colleges offering T Levels in your industry.
